WATHABA HIKING TRAILS
Wathaba Whereabouts: Wathaba is a wilderness area in the Skurweberg Mountains on the road between Machadodorp and Badplaas. The beautiful scenery, many waterfalls and the indigenous kloof vegetation are topped only by the breathtaking views down the valley to the Komati River far below.
Take a Walk on the Wild Side: A three minute walk upstream brings you to the stunning Wathaba Rainbow Falls and a natural pool surrounded by wild flowers and dense forest vegetation. During the summer the water is cool and refreshing, especially after a walk up the mountain. In the winter it is cold and only the bravest go swimming. There are two well marked hiking trails with a variety of tree species, birdlife, wild flowers and plenty of waterfalls. The “Bosbok Roete” is 4 km and the “Lynx Loop” about 10 km.
Accommodation:
BOTTLEBRUSH HAVEN, situated alongside the Schoonspruit stream, is slightly primitive, but very convenient; accommodating minimum 6 adults, maximum 16 people and minimum two nights with a lovely kitchen and two ‘braai’ areas, two flush toilets, two double showers and unique zinc tub. (Don’t forget the bubble bath!!) Bottlebrush has three different sleeping quarters, sleeping 8, 4 & 4 people. “Bottlebrush Haven” is reasonably wheelchair friendly (on request).
KIEPERSOL KAMP can accommodate minimum 12 adults, maximum 23 people and minimum two nights with a very large kitchen (and under cover braai area) two double showers, 4 flush toilets and a zinc tub. (I’m reminding you again not to forget the bubble bath!!!) There is also an outside braai. The camp has four different sleeping quarters sleeping 5, 5, 5 and 8 in the double storey. “Kiepersol Kamp” is reasonably wheelchair friendly. (3 of Kiepersol Kamp’s toilets are also used by day hikers and Waterbessie’s guests.)
WATERBESSIE accommodating minimum 6 adults, maximum 16 people and minimum two nights is slightly different to the other camps as it has a fully equipped kitchen up to the egg whisk! Four gas plates for cooking, two gas lamps and two battery operated lights. The ‘open plan’ sleeping room (12m x 8m) has an indoor fireplace which serves as the “donkey” for warm water for the two showers and dishwashing water, and ‘braaing’ in case of rain. It also warms up the room during Winter! The outside braai is just temporary as we are planning to build proper outside ‘braai’ facilities alongside the Schoonspruit river. The flush toilets are 25m away at Kiepersol Kamp’s ablution. At an extra tariff per person per night full clean bedding can be arranged. Catering, on request, can also be arranged.
MOUNTAIN CREEK CABIN is a cosy, comfortable and quaint cabin sleeping 2-4 guests. The cabin is self-catering, fully equipped (except for swimming towels), private and exclusive. There is a fireplace inside the cabin and braai facilities outside. The ‘donkey’ geyser supplies the warm water for which ample wood is supplied.

Mattresses with clean covers are supplied. A few paraffin lamps, candles, a griddle, kettle, a few pots and pans. Enough firewood for your stay will also be supplied. Please use the firewood sparingly. If you run out of firewood then extra wood can be bought. There is no electricity so cool bags are a must to keep meat, butter, cool drinks, etc. cold. It would be wise to bring a gas plate for boiling water for that quick cup of coffee!
